Some things are forever?!

Remember the post on Stone Temple Pilots?

Was not kidding when I said "someday, the little one will join in"

In spite of Chennai being rained out for 43 days, the one day that the kids visited Chennai on their 5 day India vacation, the rain let go temporarily. We made a quick trip to see my grandma and on the way meet my buddy Kabali.

Jr. remembered the elephants and ran to it!

and this time the little one followed ! She needed help but enjoyed sitting on it. Their smiles brought back so many memories!

Some things seem to bring a constant into our variable lives. The stone elephants at the Kapaleeshwarar temple are one of those constants in our life!

Attention everyone: We now have a teen in the house!

Thirteen years ago, something magical happened!

Jr. came out and stared at me with those big beady eyes for the very first time.

The nurse said they were all surprised by a few hour old baby looking up at everyone with her eyes wide open. Given San was so overdue, we treated the newborn as a two week old!

That was my 30th birthday present from Sangeetha!

Today that present has grown to be as tall as me and is funny enough to pose for a recreation selfie.

We found her "poobie" for this special photo.

My grandma used to say "eera peen akki, peena perichchaali akkakara madhiri unna ungamma valththurukka".. it loosely translates to "taking a small thing that lice eat in your head and growing it into a lice, then growing a lice into a large rat.. that is how hard it has been for your mom to raise you". I am sure something was lost in the translation there in spite of my best effort.

Relatively speaking Jr. has been an easy kid. She has been healthy and happy and easy going. She always cares about folks around her and holds us very very accountable whenever she gets a chance to do so.

Here's to our big baby!

It does not matter if you turn 13 or 30. Will continue to save that blanket somewhere in the house and if I am still hale and healthy when you turn 30, we can  recreate this picture on your 30th birthday!

Here is to many more happy birthday's to my little girl who continues to amaze us everyday!

Happy Diwali

It is always difficult when Diwali comes in a weekday and you are in the USA. They should declare it a holiday at least in Cupertino!

Wishing you all a wonderful Diwali!

May this Deepavali bring you light and joy.

They made the Deepams (Dia's) as part of their art class. The little one is going through the "conscious phase of posing for photos" now that she is a "tween" aka "big girl"!

As far as I am concerned, they will NEVER be big girls.

They are growing up though. Finally did a collage of them in a third nice dress this year..

Cannot believe this year is coming to an end in a few more weeks. Have to post a lot of thoughts and pictures. Will get to them before end of the year.

For now, time to enjoy the sweets and savories made by MIL, and enjoy the smiling faces all around!

Happy Deepavali!

The girl with the golden sax

This year, Jr. decided to play the alto saxophone at Golus instead of singing songs. She practiced the weekend before and played three or four small pieces.
She looked majestic in her half sari and the saxophone matched her dress like another jewel!
Jr. has been teaching herself these pieces. Not that confident yet on her ability to play south Indian classical music. We are all encouraging her to practice more. This year her teacher has promised to help her with understanding the complex notation as well as making it easy to play these pieces. Next year, she might play the entire songs..
Here is a small clip from this years Golu at a friends place..
She made us proud just for trying!

Out of time, out of place

Conversation with Jr. while driving her back from class

Me: did you know that your cousins and uncle went to a high school football game ? Apparently it is called a ..

Jr. : Homecoming game.. I know. Do you know why it is called a homecoming game?

Me: No.

Jr. : (starts explaining something about games, winning, losing, parties, etc. etc.) and sees my eyes glaze over in the rear view mirror and asks "do you know what a homecoming is?"

Me : No.

Jr. : didn't you have any school rivalries when you went to school?

Me: No.

Jr. : Didn't you have homecoming games?

Me: No.

Jr. : thinks for a second and goes "okay. let's start with the basics. Did you go to high school?! "

Next time I have to start steering the conversation in a different direction.
