Veetukku Veedu - Golu Padi !!

Some golu photos with permission of the Navarathrers..

So large that they had to be covered in multiple shots and stitched to get the entire display in one photo.

What bothers me is that even still life stitch photos end up showing a "seam"..

Finally a side view of a golu padi as sold at The Home Depot (Planks are sold separately!).

These are actually "patio" steps. Did you know that this is called a "brain step". Apparently the average human being lifts his/her leg up exactly 8 inches +/- 0.0005 inches (okay, it is more like *+/-0.25 inches) to climb up steps? That is why most city codes require that when you step down from the house to the patio or when you have steps inside the house they have to be 8 inches tall!

The home depot "Padi" standardizes the "Golu Platform". Hey, did you notice that for once, I came up with a sentence that makes me sound like a software dude?!

As usual, this post ends with a promise to lobby my parents to start doing a golu in our house. It is a killer to tell the girls that we do NOT follow golu tradition, just because of a pathetic statistical correlation between great grandma keeping golu coinciding with a death in the family that same year, especially considering :

a. very large family
b. cholera and TB epidemics being widespread in those days

facts, that seriously taint that correlation.

San is worried that god forbid, we start a golu and someone dies, it will be correlated again and we will be blamed.

To hell with it, is what I say. We have two very disappointed dolls at home, pining for a doll display.

Lovely Golu Sundar!!! Really impressive that your family has taken so much care to set it up amidst this mechanical busy life here.

~nm, sudha, these are from relatives and friends.. we have only a social "vethalai pakku" sundal thing at our house. .

because my mom tells me that it is not customary to keep golu in our house..

we will change that... hopefully soon..

how lovely - reminds me of home, sigh! My mom has kept a huge beautiful golu this year!

We don't keep golu cos my MIL made a vow that she'd keep golu only if she had a daughter - which she didn't.
I've also decided that if I ever have daughters, I will start!
you should totally go for it...the girls will love it!

Really cool :)
Happy Navrathri, hope the "dolls" get to set up dolls next year!

So is LO getting "EhDhu todhakkufied" yet? I found out my niece who is not even two yet is getting initiated into the world of Godess Saraswathi this year. Meanwhile, I danced around till I was four-ish years old!

Sundarji,

Title very impressive.

You are a great character and this reveals in each and every post and the way you see things. I admire your capabilities. Where do you have this much of energy.

Your daughters of really lucky to have a Dad like you and so your wife.

I think if at all we meet one day, we may have many topics for discussions.

Sorry I realise what I said may be confusing. Terrible Tanglish.

Anyways what I meant was...

Sundar annah neenga LO'vukku edhu thodakiteengala?

The Education initiation ceremony that happens around Saraswati puja.

Thank you very much for posting pictures on this. I was wondering how to build a good Padi myself. I have a question for you - do you simply place the planks on the risers? or do actually nail them down. And I was also wondering if you fix the Step Raisers to the wall somehow. Thank you

the planks have screws that you screw down to the frame from underneath on the ones we have seen.
