Travel learning

Travel does bring some interesting insights. There are a lot of things that catch my eye. Things that make me realize the world is shrinking faster than I thought it is, even by my standards.

Was sleeping on the flight. When I woke up, saw the elderly gentleman next to me laughing and being thoroughly amused by what he was watching. Looked up at his monitor and this is what I saw!

Found it on my own screen to take a picture. We could not communicate very well as he spoke only Chinese and very fast. I nodded to what he said which was "something positive about Indian movies" based on reading his body language and knowing what "hao" meant.

He was laughing his ass off after a few minutes when a romantic song came on. My guess is the subtitles cracked him up! I started laughing with him after reading the English subtitles for the song.

If you want to learn the language fast, there is no better way than to watch soap operas from your native language dubbed in another language. Was flipping through the channels sitting in the hotel room and was pleasantly surprised to find four channels showing different Indian soaps in Chinese!

Another interesting thing to note is how when you go on local trains, they project images and videos on the tunnel walls.. from the train to catch eyeball time of train goers! The passengers have to stare at something anyways. It was amazing to watch the windows become big screen TV's. Turns out Steph Curry is throwing a three pointer at every alternate station. This time all I got was the Nike ad.

Looks like there is a large market for desi Soaps! The east asian community will know the harmful side effects of these soaps in a few years. The most repeated theme in these soaps is cruel mother-in-laws or daughters-in-law. The rate at which old martial arts based soaps are being replaced with these, I shudder at the impact this will have on Chinese MIL's and DIL's!

After asking around, found out that they are the new favorite among housewives in China! God help them.
