India, Pakistan, Iraq, USA, gooooo Wikileaks! *

Finally got to a mirror site to read some Wikileaks. For some reason the links would not work on the sites or Firefox would scare me. Tonight the stars aligned and this site let me in..

This was nice reading. Was hoping to have a laugh at what came out of Delhi but found this one from Islamabad and it was interesting..

These two paragraphs really made it interesting..

Pakistan/India

He mentioned that discussion of the consequences of a follow-on attack made both India and Pakistan hostage to extremists and increased the likelihood of an attack. “If there is any clue about another attack,” he said, “please share it with us.”

Swat Valley

¶5. (C) Kayani was clear that the GOP had lost control of the Swat valley. He said the police had no ability to come in after the army to “hold” territory. He recounted that half of the 600 police officers, supposedly from the NWFP’s elite police units, destined for Swat had deserted, largely because there was no command structure. Petraeus replied that the U.S. had confronted this same issue in Iraq, describing it as a “clear and leave” strategy, requiring the retaking of the same ground multiple times. Petraeus observed that the police are the most vulnerable, since they are exposed in communities. Petraeus noted that increased measures to control population movements would probably have to be put in place throughout the country, which would require considerable manpower.

Pakistan has similar issues like Iraq when it comes to controlling extremists.

The military leadership is patient enough to not go for war. That is great. Maybe, maybe there will be a lasting peace when India and Pakistan jointly fight extremists.

The USA for its part is playing both sides. Well, that is to be expected!

India could have hastily gone to war and would be in the same boat as the USA. Thankfully there was no war. Looks like India was warned by the US about the attacks and the Pakistanis could not do anything about it either.

Just go through this stuff.. you might even find out who in India was warned about the attacks and what they did when they were warned!

This is one treasure trove of information which shows you that inspite of all that press and google and facebook being ubiquitous and in our face.. the hows and whys are always wrong!

Educated folks react to information thrown at them by the "in your face" media. We assume so many things, sway to popular opinion or in cases where we think we are better than the person who gets their news from facebook friends because we read and read a lot.. well, we read garbage!

If the press did what Wikileaks exposed on a daily basis, a lot of war, bloodshed would have been averted! A lot of politicians would have been exposed and their true colors come to light. People, countries might be more civil towards each other...

Well, maybe..

First come first severed?

We all know of first come first served. Poetry pointed out that it might not be the case!

After reading this post, the first thought was "What in the world would prompt a person to go on a self funded expendition to the North pole and again to the south pole, within a span of a few months?"

As a guy who has not seen his frontyard and backyard in the same week for the last few months, the answer to that question was definitely not going to be found in the confines of my tiny head. Then again, why does anyone want to go anywhere or do things that would otherwise be considered ardous?

There was a "been there, done that" part of me that has somehow died a long time ago. These days that feeling is reserved for "yep. we can now count by fives" or "we know digraphs and blends now" or even the "hey, that bowl of cheerios got into her under 45 minutes!" and the bar is lowered on a daily basis!

To say that a person going to the Poles (self funded or otherwise) is commendble, is an under statement. It is something to be very proud of! If you are the first one from a nation with a billion plus population, it is a crowning achievement.

There are not that many people who have visited both poles in the same year (and especially since the mainstream Indian media is officially saying that the first Indian woman is going in 2010), it is sad that this earlier contribution is not being recognized.

Funny thing is you can go to www.thepoles.com and verify that Saraswathy indeed was part of the expeditions and she has the pictures to prove it!

That brings us to how people who are silent don't get recognized for what they have accomplished. This is the part where agents all over the world chime in and say "I told you. We are expensive, but there is a reason we make a living!", and that is where you, the reader of this blog(especially those who have blogs of your own), will hopefully verify for yourself that Saraswathy did ski at the poles and will at least give her the recognition she deserves in the blogosphere, if not in the official press!

Saraswathy is not promoting herself. Her friends are pushing for her to get her recognition and that is very touching.

ps. Have never met Saraswathy in person and have not heard of her accomplishment before reading Poetry's post. Surprised that local magazines like Thendral haven't picked this up.

11 players 1100000000 fans !!

It is already stale news that India have lost their stake in the Cricket World Cup.

I actually went to a friends place and watched from noon to 1:15. Boy, was I disappointed. I saw 5 wickets fall within that space.

What infuriated me most was the transcript of the interview of the Indian Coach, Greg Chappell which I happened to read on Cricinfo.

In light of the fact that the coach of the Pakistan team has been murdered right after that team exited the world cup, is it even appropriate for the press to ask pointed questions to try and assign blame right after the match, knowing that there is a mob out there that is just waiting to lap up everything the press is going to dish out tomorrow ? Has the press no moral fibre?

It is this same press that takes these ordinary humans who are trying to play a game and escalates them to demi-god status. The same press is fed by advertising revenue from the very same sponsors who artificially inflate the worth of the players by giving them exhorbitant endorsement deals, publicity that would put movie actors to shame and way too much postive or negative focus to make or break their confidence and careers.

If the press were to put these players where they ought to be put, just players playing a game and if there is a law banning players from endorsing products or appearing in commercials, maybe things would improve. The press should actually point the fingers at themselves. They asked the Indian team coach if it is "time for a reality check?". It is time the press did a reality check on their role in this loss. They also asked the team captain "arent you answerable to your fans ?". HELL NO!! Movie actors play for their audience. Their end goal is box office success. Sportsmen play for the game. Their end goal is a victory against the other team! Not commercial success. Their game should not be linked to ratings or revenue!!

On a personal note,
1. I have made a promise to not watch or track cricket for the next 365 days!
2. There will be no requests to order the matches on Dish Network
3. No checking Cricinfo
4. No participation in water cooler gossip about things including and excluding Sehwag et. al. with the English, West Indians, Pakistanis and Sri Lankans I know.
5. There will be no joint reminiscing with my co-brother or my wife's cousins from down under either!

This is Sundar's sabatham(wow)! Yeah, I am the next Mangamma...

ps. The wife is happy that she does not have to cough up the $199 or $ 129 or $... for ordering the remaining matches! Did you see the way the price for the Super 8 package drop as the Indian Wickets fell ?!

pps. As a person who has watched cricket for this long, inspite of all the scandals, match fixing, the crappy performance of the team, etc., I also share some responsibility for fueling this out of control fire. As an Indian Cricket fan, I take responsibility for my part!! Hence this decision.
