Sundar becomes Sundar San at Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

The previous post in this series is here..

After the deer park there was another ride to the Arashiyama bamboo forest complex. What made this interesting was the dress up.

Our guide told us that we could rent authentic Japanese clothing and take pictures through the forest. We could pay extra and wear it the rest of the day and return it at another branch in Kyoto.

Due to some communication mixup between the front and back of the bus, the men confirmed that we are doing this.. all six of us. As soon as the bus stopped, we were told that the groups that dress up would wait. The guide will direct the rest of the group and come back and get us. It also meant we would have 40 minutes less to spend. That meant walking faster. Sadly we got authentic Japanese sandals as well. This made the walking challenging, especially for the ladies. They were cursing us for most of the walk. We walked for almost two hours in that costume while taking pictures. The pictures came out great!

When we were still in the bus the locals wearing kimonos were wearing sport shoes. Should have noticed that! You will see it in one of the pics. Given there were almost 500 photos just at this place, this gallery is a highlight in itself.

A few shots in landscape format..

The bamboo forest is breathtaking. The crowds do spoil it. Still we got a lot of pictures without the crowd. Folks are nice and patient and let you take pictures without cutting in. Guess everyone becomes polite in Japan.. that included us.

After the fact everyone agreed it was not a bad idea. We returned the costumes right there after coming back but did not have time to get any proper lunch. So everyone had some ice cream and fruit before getting back on the bus.

Our recommendation is you do rent the costume but keep your shoes. Carry the sandals in a bag if required. Just change at places for an authentic photo. This way the walking is not compromised.

There was one more stop before we were going to be dropped at the Kyoto train station..

The cherry blossoms - reason for the whole trip

Previous post in this series is here..

It was 3PM when we came out of the Shinkansen to Osaka station. We were seeing on social media that we were already a week late and the Cherry Blossoms were already on their way to falling off. By the time we reached Kyoto and Tokyo, there would be no blossoms. So if we wanted to see them in Osaka, there was one place on the hill to go see them. The Katsuoji temple!

It was an hour by car and they closed on the dot. We decided to grab two taxis again and just made a dash to the temple. An hour later we were dropped off outside the temple. There was a line for tickets. Yet again, Jr. came to the rescue by buying the tickets from her phone as we were going to the place. We went straight in with the “web tickets”. The temple is just beautiful. The cherry blossoms were still there. The whole place was surreal and immaculate. There were cute mini versions of the shinto gods everywhere.. placed on rocks, trees, in the water..

There were six locations which had stamps in different colors. You got a card at the entrance. If you put all stamps on them, you got a nice composite picture with the stamps. We made it to all the spots in the map, got the stamps and were literally the last visitors to be kicked out of the temple complex. We were all tired but happy. It was nice and cool in the hill. There were still a few taxis waiting. So we were lucky to get two taxis to go to our next destination.

Way too many photos post edit. Have created two galleries..

The final image after we stamped the card in all six locations.. The best one is mine as I used multiple alignment marks like a real integration engineer would!

Here is a short video of Katsuoji temple visit..

We were all happy at the end of the entire trip that we decided to go up to this temple even after an all day Hiroshima visit. We never saw Cherry blossoms like this after that day in Kyoto or Tokyo.

Our day was not over. The temple closes at 5:15 sharp. We got out at 5:14 PM. There was an hour plus drive back towards busy streets. Will pick it up in the next post..

Japan for the first time

Last year there was a graduation trip planned. Jr. was finishing her masters at UCI. My in-laws were visiting for the graduation and the plan was to go to two national parks in Colorado. My dad passed away. The trip was cancelled. We did manage to literally come back after the rituals were done and go straight for the graduation ceremony.

This spring we decided to do that grad trip. Unfortunately the little one could not join us. She was interviewing for jobs and was trying to finish her 4 year school in 3 years.

My BFF wanted to go on a trip together and we combined everything. So six of us went on a week long adventure to Japan. My friend has traveled to Japan a dozen times in his early Intel years but had selective memories of only Tokyo. A lot of stuff was new to him as well.

Most of the planning was done by Jr. , San and my friend. I gave a few inputs using copilot and found a few gotchas in the plan and found two Viator tours to save us a day. Other than that my contribution was a big zero. Did play photographer for the entire trip.

We covered Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Tokyo, Mt. Fuji all in that week. We were welcomed to Japan with an amazing view of Mt. Fuji from the plane. All the passengers came to the windows on the right and that must have made it difficult for the pilot as the weight shifted!

A short highlights video..

As soon as we landed in Osaka airport, Jr. told us to get the SUICA app and cards loaded to our phone. We did not listen to her. To this day we regret not taking her advice. We had enough Yen, we told her!

We took a train from the Osaka airport to the Osaka Namba area. Quickly checked into the Tokyo Inn at the Osaka Namba. There were kiosks to check in. It was interesting that the staff just watched as we were asked to scan passports and credit cards etc.

After a quick freshening up, we came back down for our first sightseeing within a few hours of landing. Did I mention this trip was planned rather meticulously?
